Jornalista melhora profundidade de reportagem com mentoria da IREX
MAPUTO, Moçambique, 25 de Abril de 2013 – O jornalista André Catueira, residente em Manica e participante no projecto de mentoria em jornalismo investigativo na IREX, focaliza o seu trabalho na área de direitos humanos. Com a mentoria, ele adquiriu novas habilidades e técnicas para desenvolver seu trabalho. “Através da mentoria, consegui aprofundar meu conhecimento de jornalismo investigativo”, disse Catueira. “Aprendi como trabalhar com as fontes, obter maior abertura e extrair informação sem embaraçá-las”, acrescentou. Após dois meses de sessões online com a IREX em Maputo, conduzidas por Skype e por correio electrónico, a equipa de mentoria auxiliou o trabalho de apuração de Catueira, durante os dias 6 e 7 de Abril, em Chimoio. Uma reportagem sobre extracção e tráfico de órgãos humanos, que ele realizou durante a mentoria, foi publicada na última edição do jornal Savana. O artigo é baseado num assunto que Catueira publicara há quase dez anos – dando seguimento aos impactos na vida quotidiana de uma vítima de extracção de órgãos humanos. Abandonado por seus pais biológicos e adoptivos, assim como pela sociedade, a vítima enfrenta tremendos desafios físicos e psicológicos. A matéria aborda a situação da vítima e a falta de acompanhamento pela sociedade. O projecto de mentoria na IREX é orientado por Ricardo Fontes Mendes, um especialista brasileiro, e por outros membros da equipa da IREX. A mentoria é parte da componente de capacitação profissional do Programa Para Fortalecimento da Mídia, implementado pela IREX e financiado pela USAID.

Mentorship enhances journalist’s approach to in-depth reporting
CHIMOIO, Mozambique, 25 April 2013 – Journalist Andre Catueira, a resident of Manica province and participant in the IREX mentorship program for investigative journalists, focuses his work on issues in the area of human rights. Through the mentorship program, he has aquired new skills and techniques that he can apply in his work. “Through the mentorship program, I have been able to deepen my knowledge of investigative journalism,” said Catueira. “I am picking up tips on how to work with sources, how to approach the subjects and how to obtain information without causing pressure or embarassmant.” After two months of online sessions with the IREX team in Maputo, carried out over Skype and by email, the mentorship team accompanied Catueira in the field on April 6 and 7 in Chimoio. An article on the traficking of human organs, which was one of the articles he worked on during the mentorship, was published in the latest edition of Savana. The article builds on material that Catueira has been working on for almost a decade – the follow-up of a victim of traficking in human organs. Abandoned by both his biological and adoptive parents, as well as by society at large, the victim had suffered tremendous physical and psychological challenges. The article addressed the victim’s situation and the lack of support from society. The mentorship program at IREX is directed by Ricardo Fontes Mendes, a Brazilian specialist, and other staff members. The mentorship is part of the professional capacity building component of the Media Strengthening Program, which is implemented by IREX and financed by USAID. The mentorship program currently enrols ten experienced journalists.
