GLOBAL MIGRATION FILM FESTIVAL (GMFF)

 

IOM partnered with Apolitecnica and Catholic Universities to celebrate the Global Migration Film Festival 2023, fostering crucial conversations about migration among over 100 students in Maputo and Pemba.

 

 

 

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GBV

IOM celebrated the Orange Day across its offices in Maputo, Pemba, Beira and Nampula, with a commitment step up, speak out, and stand strong with GBV survivors. 

 

 

 

In Quirambo Island, in Cabo Delgado, IOM is using the power of community theatre to raise awareness on Gender Based Violence and Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA), share crucial information, and provide support services in an engaging and enjoyable manner.

WORLD AIDS DAY

 

 

 

Pregnant and diagnosed with HIV, Samia found hope through counseling and treatment. Since 2022, IOM Mozambique's health programs touched 350,000 lives, addressing SRHR, HIV, TB, and COVID-19.

ACCESS TO ENERGY

Can you imagine what life would be like with limited access to energy?

For displaced people, this reality poses a great challenge. Learn here how IOM and partners are introducing sustainable energy solutions in displacement settings in Mozambique. 

 

 

 

 

CHOLERA RESPONSE

In response to the cholera outbreak in Mozambique, IOM led a training program in Moatize district to strengthen the Community Event-Based Surveillance system. Thousands were impacted and cases swiftly addressed.

COMMUNITY BASED PLANNING (CBP)

 

IOM supports communities in Northern Mozambique to identify their needs, set priorities and work towards sustainable peace. Recently, through CBP, four community centers have been built in Macomia, and a road connecting two villages in Ancuabe has been fixed.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Through Radio Listening Group sessions, IOM has been raising awareness on crucial issues like fire safety and preventing vandalism against communal infrastructure across displacement sites.

INCLUSION

IOM leads the way in inclusive management by setting up Disability Inclusion Committees at displacement sites. These dynamic forums, made up of people with special needs and their carers, facilitate open dialogue, collaborative problem-solving and decision-making.

SITE PLANNING 

Amidst the upcoming rainy season, IOM is collaborating with local authorities and communities to establish safe resettlement areas in Sofala for over 1,500 families previously affected by Cyclone Feddy.

WASH

In Mozambique, women and children often embark on challenging journeys to obtain water. IOM is improving water security in Mozambique, promoting health, dignity, and economic stability among communities.

WOMEN PARTICIPATION PROJECT

Over 200 groups including more than 1,500 women from IDP and host communities are coming together to brainstorm, create and support each other in building community-focused businesses aimed to empower women through income-generating activities.

MEET FILOMENA

 

 

In 2019, southern Africa witnessed the devastating power of Cyclone Idai which swept through the region, leaving millions of people grappling with its aftermath. Hundreds of thousands of people in Mozambique lost their homes and livelihoods to the heavy winds, rains, and floods.

In the wake of the cyclone, many people in Mozambique sought refuge on higher grounds, with approximately 12,000 people ending up at Maxaquiri 1, one of the largest resettlement sites for internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Among those displaced to Maxaquiri 1 were Filomena, her husband Augusto, and their three children, all under the age of 10. Though recently displaced, the young couple’s lives had already been marked by the ebb and flow of displacement and resilience.

MIGRATION AND DISPLACEMENT DATA

Periodic Global Report on the State Solutions to Internal Displacement

 

Internally Displaced People (IDPs) who have access to adequate housing are over three times more likely to not rely on humanitarian assistance and twice as likely to have stable income according to a study published today by the International Organization for Migration's Global Data Institute (GDI) in partnership with Georgetown University in the United States.
