MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY

In Cabo Delgado, IOM supported over 100 people with menstrual hygiene and management awareness, and distributed 50 dignity kits containing reusable pads, toiletries, and underwear.

ENHANCING LIVES AND CONNECTIONS IN RESETTLEMENT SITES

Since 2020, the Corrane Resettlement Site in Nampula Province has accommodated over 4,200 people displaced by insecurity in northern Mozambique. Despite evolving into a vibrant community, residents faced a critical challenge: accessing the site. Responding to these challenges, a collaborative effort involving IOM, the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD), District Services for Planning and Infrastructure (SDPI), National Road Administration (ANE), and community leaders was initiated. The result has been a new, 3-kilometer route connecting Corrane and host communities.

MEET YAHUVALE

In northern Mozambique, escalating conflict is forcing thousands of families to flee in search of safety. From April 17 to May 5 alone, over 103,000 people have been displaced by attacks and the threat of further violence in the districts of Ancuabe, Chiure, and Erati.

Meet Yahuvale, a resilient 75-year-old woman, who recently arrived at the Nicavaco displacement site after a distressing three-day journey through the forest, alongside her 10 children and 3 baby grandchildren.

Fleeing armed conflict, she recounts, "I saw fire in neighboring houses... we didn't know where we were going, but we walked for three days." Despite the fear, the support of a cane and her family kept her going.

Now, she shelters under a cashew tree, finding solace in newfound friendships and shared meals. "I don't want to think about going back... here I can sleep peacefully."

The needs of displaced people in Mozambique continue to grow, and support is more important than ever.

IOM works to address the immediate needs of displaced people in northern Mozambique such as shelter, food assistance, protection, mental health and health while also supporting their longer-term recovery and resilience-building efforts.
