Supporting life, health and development, water is essential for peace and stability. In Mozambique, amid rising displacement, access to clean water is critical. Learn how IOM is promoting resilience among communities, striving for universal access to safe water.

WORLD TB DAY

 

 

Health-care services in South Africa and Mozambique often fail to reach mineworkers, like Felix Nandza, before they become ill with diseases like TB. Learn how IOM supports occupational health services for this vulnerable group here.

Through self-choreographed dances and songs, both displaced and local women from the cultural dance group of the Meculane community in Chiure spread educational and motivational messages within the community. Their aim is to enhance community relations and foster social cohesion.

 

 

ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE

IOM supports health authorities in providing vital health services to conflict-affected displaced communities in Mozambique. From mobile clinics to community-based care, these efforts are making a real difference in people's lives.

MIGRATION, ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE

 

 

In Mozambique, close to one million people are affected by displacement. It's crucial to include these communities in the transition to clean energy. In a workshop held in Maputo IOM unveiled insights from a clean energy initiative with private sector partners to empower displaced communities.

TROPICAL STORM FILIPO

 

 

"The entire roof was taken off. That's when I ran to get my son. I lost my coconut and cashew trees, my clothes flew away, and I don't even know where the roofing sheets ended up."  
 

Tropical Storm Filipo made landfall in Mozambique on 12 March. Strong winds and torrential rains wreaked havoc across the central and southern provinces, causing widespread flooding and leaving a path of destruction in its wake including damage to homes, livelihoods, and essential infrastructures.

VIOLENCE UPSURGE IN CABO DELGADO

 

 

The violence in Cabo Delgado has seen an important increase, with affected communities bearing the brunt of these relentless attacks.

"We left our village in Ocua, Chiure, in the dead of night, scared because of those attacks happening nearby. We didn't bring anything with us, just the clothes on our backs. It's not just me, there are nine of us from my family, including the little ones. We're all in this together, trying to stay safe and keep each other going."

DISASTER RISK REDUCTION

Mozambique is a top-ten most vulnerable country to climate change. With its vast coastlines and low-lying areas, urgent action is needed. Recently in Beira, IOM hosted a vital session empowering INGD on climate change and migration.

Mozambique is top 7 in child marriage rates. Child marriage robs girls of their childhood, education, and autonomy. IOM Mozambique stood up at the 11th Africa Conference on Sexual Reproductive Health Rights, discussing migration, SRH in crises and youth SRH!

DURABLE SOLUTIONS

Mahate neighborhood in Pemba hosts over 10,000 IDPs fleeing insecurity in Cabo Delgado. IOM and UN Habitat drive sustainable urban integration with a community-led plan encompassing infrastructure, livelihoods and MHPSS/psychosocial activities.

IMMIGRATION AND BORDER GOVERNANCE

Over 300 personnel from justice institutions are now equipped to prevent transnational crime and NSAG threats thanks to 13 Critical Decision-Making trainings in Cabo Delgado.

LOCALIZATION

Through localization efforts, IOM supports local actors to lead change in their communities. IOM provided Camp Coordination and Management training to four local organizations supporting displaced communities in northern Mozambique.

The Government of Mozambique discussed results of its first-ever Migration Governance Indicators (MGI) mapping. The findings assess migration policies and advance the conversation on what well-governed migration might look like in Mozambique.

PROTECTION FROM SEXUAL EXPLOITATION AND ABUSE (PSEA)

MEET SAFIRA

 

 

"With this new hygiene kit, I can now wash my clothes daily and maintain better personal hygiene. I feel much more fulfilled." 

Persons with disabilities often encounter heightened hygiene challenges, facing obstacles that can be exacerbated during the rainy season due to the increase of water-borne diseases. 

Safira's mobility limitations make her daily tasks, such as maintaining personal hygiene, considerably more difficult. 

Initiatives like IOM's handwashing station installation and provision of hygiene kits play a crucial role in mitigating these challenges, promoting dignity and resilience, and ensuring the well-being of people like Safira.

 

 

PARTNERSHIPS

 

 

 

IOM Mozambique Chief of Mission, Dr. Laura Tomm-Bonde, met with Pemba's new Mayor and discussed how IOM can continue supporting the Government of Mozambique in addressing the needs of displacement-affected communities in Cabo Delgado.

IOM Migration Health Division Director visited Ressano Garcia health centre at the Mozambican and South African border, where vital occupational health and TB services are provided ensuring safe migration with specialized healthcare for mineworkers.

The Government of Japan commits additional funding to support Mozambique's pathways to sustainable development and strengthen humanitarian aid in the north. Working alongside Mozambique's government and key institutions, IOM, UNHCR and FAO will implement this initiative.
