Dear partners,
You will find here the IOM Internal Displacement Situation Report #2 - Mozambique Crisis: Escalating Violence in Northern Mozambique and Tropical Storm Filipo.
Mozambique is currently facing a worsening in the humanitarian crisis due to escalating conflict in northern provinces and reoccurring disasters related to natural hazards in central and southern provinces, resulting in over 170,000 individuals newly affected across the country.
Since December 22, 2023, a total of 112,894 individuals have been forced to flee their homes due to increased attacks or the fear of such attacks by non-state armed groups, making it the second-largest displacement event since the Palma attacks in 2021. Additionally, as of March 15, over 59,000 people have been impacted by the landfall of Tropical Storm Filipo on March 12. This has led to widespread property damage and the opening of six accommodation centers in Inhambane Province.
IOM has been providing vital support to communities displaced by conflict, including shelter, health services, mental health and psychosocial support, protection, displacement tracking, site management and coordination efforts. Additionally, IOM is collaborating with the government and partners to assess and manage the impact of Tropical Storm Filipo, deploying teams for coordination and providing essential supplies and response to cholera outbreaks.
However, IOM's response is hindered by funding shortages as only 15 percent of the $43 million needed for IOM's portion of the Humanitarian Response Plan 2024 has been secured. An additional $3.9 million is required to provide a multi-sectoral response to both crisis and cover the needs of 105,000 affected individuals. Without increased financial support, essential services may be compromised.
For a detailed overview, please refer to the full report.
Warm regards,
IOM Mozambique
